Tennis fans in Argentina are set for an early Christmas treat, thanks to former world No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro.

The country’s beloved tennis hero announced that he will be taking part in an exhibition match this December—and his “dream” opponent is set to be 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

“I have a dream. I want to play my last match in Argentina, and I want you to be there,” Del Potro was seen asking Djokovic in a promotional video shared to his social media platforms.

Djokovic, who replied in perfect Spanish, confirmed, “Are you kidding me? Obviously I’ll be there… For you, in Argentina? Yes, of course I’ll be there.”

The 35-year-old Tandil native played his last ATP match in February 2022 at the 250 event in Buenos Aires. It marked the unofficial end of a storied career marked by historic achievements, including the 2009 US Open title among 22 ATP titles, but also marred by numerous injuries and setbacks.

Last year, Del Potro announced plans for a farewell match at the 2023 US Open, but was  eventually unable to compete due to a lingering knee injury.

The Argentine made his long-awaited return to Arthur Ashe Stadium this year, partnering with fellow national legend Gabriela Sabatini in doubles during the Stars of the Open charity exhibition event.

Del Potro and Djokovic will face off in “The Final Challenge” on December 1 at Parque Roca in Buenos Aires. Djokovic leads their official head-to-head 16-4.
