CHARLESTON — There’s a long tradition of tennis players having a hit in conditions that go beyond the norm.
Now, Naomi Osaka and Johanna Konta can add their names to the list.
In town for the Volvo Car Open, the two had a hit atop the roof of the Dewberry hotel in Charleston. The terrace at the boutique hotel offers views of the downtown area, the Ravenel bridge and other sites around the city.
According to the website for the hotel, the Dewberry honors “the history of the landmark L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building” and “captures the luxury and quiet restraint that are hallmarks of historic Charleston.”
Both players are kicking off their 2018 clay-court campaign in Charleston, and while they’ve had their biggest moments on hard courts—Osaka won Indian Wells this year; Konta took the 2017 Miami Open—the Top-10 seeds possess enough firepower to serve them well on the dirt.
Konta opens play against Fanny Stollar, while Osaka takes on Laura Siegemund in her second match.
