Pity poor Gastao Elias.

Or don't. After all, it's the 26-year-old Portuguese ATP player who sealed his own fate by angrily smacking a ball into stands full of spectators at the Miami Open after double-faulting to hand Horacio Zeballos a break of serve. On the changeover that followed, chair umpire Carlos Bernardes had words for Elias:

Per a Portuguese journalist's own translation, Bernardes Elias, saying, among other things, "Don't do that. You are not like that. I know you." Elias went on to lose the set and the decider to the Argentine Zeballos, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-5.

Leave it to the mercurial, angsty Nick Kyrgios, he of his own desultory mid-match history, not to be able to help himself from opining on Twitter about the matter.

The likes of Canadian pro Peter Polansky and tennis fans aplenty chose to step into the fray as well.

Unfortunately for Elias, he did not quite capture Kyrgios' winking, laconic take on the brief incident. Likely reading his touring colleague's comments literally, he fired back in straightforward fashion, serving only to further fan the situation's proverbial flames.

You might call it a triple-fault.
