Live to Give: Lauryn Tu serves underprivileged and refugee children through tennis

Lauryn Tu runs a tennis camp for underprivileged and refugee children in Houston, Texas.

In wanting to share her own blessings with those less fortunate, Tu aims to positively impact others, teaching children skills and that transcend the tennis court and translate into their personal lives.

“I truly believe life is about connecting and collecting as much experience as you can and then going out into the world and sharing everything that you've been so blessed with, with others,” Tu said.

As a firm believer in gratitude, Tu has kids participate in an activity where they write down things they were grateful for.

One main takeaway: how to have fun.

“That was the most important part,” Tu said. “While the goal was to of course teach the kids how to play tennis and just give them those basic skills, the larger picture was to provide the kids with a space to connect and to build these great friendships let them know that they’re never alone.”

Tu's program presents children the experience to try something new within an uplifting environment.

“I truly believe that all the kids walk out of there with a newfound sense of confidence in themselves.”

The children tackle new feats in learning the fundamentals of tennis while forming meaningful bonds meant to make a big difference in their lives.

“At the end of the day, we all just want to connect,” Tu said. “Being able to reach as many people as I can in my life and let them know that they are not alone, is all I can ask for.”
