"Looking good TP. Roll": Matthew McConaughey shouts out Rome semifinalist Tommy Paul

Nine years after winning the Roland Garros junior title, Tommy Paul has at last put together the breakthrough tournament on red dirt he's been looking for.

Alright, alright, alright.

On Thursday, Paul followed up his win over defending Rome champion Daniil Medvedev by battling past No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. And a certain Academy Award winner has taken notice of the American’s first trip to the semifinal stage of an ATP Masters 1000 clay-court event.

“Looks like the early year @TommyPaul1 train is back on track after it was interrupted by the ankle. Looking good TP. Roll,” posted Matthew McConaughey on X (formerly Twitter) following Paul’s latest win.

In March, Paul advanced to the final four of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells before rolling his ankle in Miami during the second set of his opener with Martin Damm. He split a pair of matches upon returning in Madrid ahead of his four victories so far at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

Last month, McConaughey declared his love for the sport on Instagram.

“Got any tips?” joked world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who previously hosted the actor in his player box at the 2023 US Open.

Paul also commented, declaring that McConaughey’s “collared sleeveless is electric.”

Looking to reach his first 1000-level final, Paul takes on Chile’s Nicolas Jarry Friday. Jarry claimed their lone previous encounter over four sets in the second round of Roland Garros last year.

If he goes on to lift the trophy, the 26-year-old would supplant Taylor Fritz as the No. 1-ranked American come Monday.
