NEW YORK—Daniil Medvedev may have lost on Sunday to Rafael Nadal, but he won the awards ceremony speech. The 23-year-old pushed Nadal to a deciding set, losing 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.

When Nadal finally closed out his 19th Grand Slam, the tournament played a video showing each of his Slam victories, moving him to tears.

"When I was looking on the screen and they were showing No. 1, No. 2, No 19, I was like, if I would win, what would they show," Medvedev said.

He was down two sets and a break before turning the match around.

"To be honest, in my mind I was already like OK what do I say in the speech, it's going to be soon in 20 minutes," he said.

Instead, he lasted 4 hours and 49 minutes. The new world No. 4 addressed the crowd after a few roller coaster moments this fortnight, including two matches where he walked away as the villain.

"I know earlier in the tournament I said something kind of in a bad way," he said. "Now, I'm saying it in a good way: It's because of your energy, guys, I was here in the final."
