“It means a lot because for me it’s a really special day,” Ferrer told the ATP Tour. “It’s my last year playing professional tennis, and winning this type of match against a Top 10 player like Sascha is a gift. I’m really happy. Now I want to enjoy this moment. I’m trying to enjoy every point and every moment that I still have."
Ferrer leaves Miami with a 34-17 record, the most matches he has won at an ATP Masters 1000 event, and two back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2005 and 2006.
The 36-year-old has just over a month of time left on tour, having announced at the 2018 US Open that the Madrid Open in May will be the final event of his career.
