Frances Tiafoe made a run to the final of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston last week, losing 6-4, 6-2 in what was a bit of a letdown performance against Jenson Brooksby. No time for rest, though: Tiafoe will face Miomir Kecmanovic at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Tuesday.
Not only did Tiafoe play four physical matches in Houston, but getting to the final didn’t give him a lot of time to rest, or much time to cross the Atlantic. With that in mind, Kecmanovic should be able to take advantage and cover a small game spread.
It’s never easy flying across the world for a tournament, so Tiafoe could be exhausted and a bit jet-lagged when he gets to the court. Also, the green clay in America is nothing like what's coming in Europe. Houston was more like a slower hard court that players can slide on. This will be a totally different sport. That said, it shouldn’t surprise anybody if Kecmanovic pounces and takes the opening set. From there, Tiafoe could have a hard time getting himself into the match.
