The former US Open finalist was the star of Chang’s event, the Michael Chang Classic, an exhibition benefiting the Michael Chang Foundation and a local Los Angeles charity, House Aid Orange County.

The world No. 20 expressed his commitment to Chang’s charity and to helping raise money for good causes.

Hundreds of fans attended the Newport Beach event to see Nishikori hit the court and sign autographs.

Despite the exhibition loss, the season is turning around for former world No. 4-ranked Nishikori. Since coming back from a serious wrist injury, he's reached the quarterfinals of Rome and the fourth round of Roland Garros. Most recently, he made a run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals before falling to eventual winner Novak Djokovic.

“The biggest key after coming back was getting confidence,” Nishikori said.

“He has zero points to defend the rest of the year," Chang said. "Whatever he does gets added to the ranking, and he can only go up from here on out. Over the summer will be a good swing for him. He’s normally done very well and he likes playing on the hard courts during the summer swing, especially the US Open, where he’s had the most success Grand Slam-wise.”

Nishikori next play the Citi Open in Washington D.C., where he took home the title in 2015.
