Noah Rubin announces indefinite break from tennis

Noah Rubin took tennis fans behind the racquet one more time on Monday, opening up about his decision to step away from his tennis career on Instagram.

“I cannot say I have fully shut the door,” Rubin wrote. “Whether unfinished business or just the want to kick some ass, I am not sure what the future holds. For now, for my own happiness and stability, the best I can give is, maybe in the future. It’s not that easy to get rid of me.”

A 2014 junior Wimbledon champion, Rubin peaked at No. 125 on the ATP rankings and became an outspoken advocate for mental health, frequently spotlighting the struggles that come with life on the professional tennis circuit.

That work is most visible with “Behind The Racquet,” a popular social media account that serves as tennis’ answer to the “People of…” series—providing a platform for stirring first-person essays from the likes of Iga Swiatek, Simona Halep, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Rubin has also launched a podcast with the same name, co-hosted by tennis broadcaster Mike Cation, and promises a further expansion of his growing media empire during his time off court.

“You’ll still be hearing this outspoken New Yorker all over the place. With documentaries, clothing lines, clubs, and a new journey I am embarking on, I won’t be taking breaks. Tough to put it all into words, and despite my complaining at times, I’ll end with a simple thank you. For all that have been a part of it until this point, no matter how large, you have made it one wild ride,” he wrote before making a joking reference to Roger Federer’s retirement:

“Tough week for tennis’ all-time greats huh?”

Rubin played his most recent match in Citi Open qualifying, where he fell in the first round to Taro Daniel.
