NEW YORK — On Tuesday, Ibtihaj Muhammad and Simone Manuel were spotted during the US Open night session supporting Serena Williams through her first-round win. The night was chalk full of celebrity sightings (like Andre Agassi, Anna Wintour and Kevin Spacey), but there was more new gold in the house than usual.

Manuel won four medals in Rio (two gold and two silver). By winning the 100m freestyle, she became the first African-American woman to win an individual gold medal in swimming.

In Rio, Muhammad won a bronze medal in the team sabre (fencing), and became the first Muslim American to compete in a hijab.

ESPN's Pam Shriver chatted with the two champions during Williams' routine win over Ekaterina Makarova. Who inspires the Olympians most won't surprise you (spoiler: the Williams sisters).

"They both have been such an inspiration to me," Manuel said. "I mean I have looked up to them because they are so dominant in a sport where they are a minority..."

Older sister Venus was on court just before Serena, beating Kateryna Kozlova in three sets.

Venus Williams won her fifth medal in Rio (a silver in mixed doubles), while Serena has won four gold medals in her career.
