Osaka fan girls over Overwatch Grand Finals

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Naomi Osaka is fearlessly passionate about her biggest off-court hobby. The 20-year-old is an avid gamer, and not only does she play video games in her spare time, but she also recently attended a professional gaming event, the Overwatch Grand Finals.

"It was really fun," she said. "It's sort of the same thing like if there's a person that plays recreational tennis and they see how pros play it. That's sort of how I felt when I went to the Overwatch final."

Just before heading to the Citi Open, she had a night out at the Barclays Center in New York for the first major global esports league final with city-based teams. The arena was full of 11,000 fans watching gamers compete on screens for a prize pool of $1 million.

"I think its pretty cool because the crowd was sort of like a basketball crowd but even louder," Osaka said.

While gaming is her off-court job, on the court Osaka has been doing well in Washington. In her debut, she pulled off a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Bernarda Pera.
