The New York Times released its "The Year in Pictures 2018", showing the biggest moments of the year around the world through the magic of photography. In the midst of politics, natural disasters and the Olympics, two tennis players made their way onto the list: Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.

The Japanese player is shown in a striking picture playing against Simona Halep in the Round of 16, who she eventually was defeated by, 6-3, 6-2. It's a little strange that the photo chosen of Osaka was at the Australian Open (in a match she lost, no less) and not the US Open where she became a worldwide sensation.

Williams was given that spot where she is shown berating umpire Carlos Ramos, during one of the biggest controversies of the year.

Williams will start her 2019 campaign first with an exhibition match against her sister Venus in Abu Dhabi and then on a team with Frances Tiafoe at the Hopman Cup in Perth.
