Outfit of the Day: Naomi Osaka's sunflower-powered Australian Open kit

The forecast in Melbourne is showing sunny days ahead.

Naomi Osaka is bringing even more sunshine to the Australian Open, thanks to a floral-inspired Nike kit that’s all about the details.

“The Australian Open's the Happy Slam, so I thought it was really fitting for it to have a sunny theme,” Osaka told press after her first-round victory.

The two-time Australian Open champion kicked off her campaign against Caroline Garcia, taking the court in a black tank top and a gray, black and white patterned skirt. But while the color scheme may be toned down, the colorful accessories elevate it to a classic Osaka look.

Bright pops of yellow and orange feature on her Nike GP Challenge 1 Osaka shoes, which also include sunflower details on the upper stitching and tongue that perfectly match her sunflower earring and hair clips.

“On the side (of the shoe) it says, ‘The sun shines where you are.’ Obviously it's sunflower-themed,” Osaka explained. “I have sunflower earrings. I had things in my hair, but I had to take them out.”

According to Hana Kuma, the media and production company Osaka launched in 2022, the outfit “drew inspiration from Jacmel, Haiti—a cultural hub filled with vibrant artists and craftspeople.”

In Japan, the sunflower is also a symbol that represents vitality, good luck and longevity—everything Osaka is wishing for her 2025 season and beyond.

Unseeded and ranked No. 51, Osaka powered into the third round at the Australian Open after toppling No. 20 seed Karolina Muchova in three sets. The victory marked her first time reaching that stage at a Grand Slam since 2022, but it’s not just another milestone on her return to tennis after maternity leave—it’s also a little dose of fashion revenge.

“She crushed me in the US Open when I had my best outfit ever. I was so disappointed,” Osaka laughed in her on-court interview. “I was so mad. This was my little revenge.”

No matter the results, there’s sure to be great outfits in store for Osaka, who has already dropped a hint about the design of her upcoming kits: “Every Slam this year will have a flower themed shoe. I think that's really cute.”

Up next, Osaka will face Belinda Bencic, who also returned from her own maternity leave late last season. Bencic defeated No. 16 seed Jelena Ostapenko and Suzan Lamens, both in straight sets, to advence.
