On Wednesday, Andrey Rublev began his bid for a second Monte Carlo Masters crown in three years when he held off Gael Monfils, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

It cemented a winning debut for his new partnership with Marat Safin, who joined Fernando Vicente on the 27-year-old’s coaching team last week.
