Paula Badosa was able to outlast Daria Kasatkina 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-4 in an intense third-round match at Wimbledon. The former world No. 2 is now into the fourth round at the All England Club for the third time in her career. And I think she’s on the verge of producing a career-best result at this event.

Badosa will take on Donna Vekic for a spot in the quarterfinals. And while Vekic is a proven grass-court performer, it’s hard to pass on a healthy Badosa at a short number.

It has been quite some time since Badosa has been able to play without pain, and her status for this tournament was in question recently. However, Badosa has had some good injury luck to this point in the tournament, and there is nothing about her performances that suggests she’s ailing. In fact, she has looked an awful lot like her former Top 5 self, as she’s absolutely hammering the ball from the baseline and moving quite well. At her peak, Badosa was one of the cleanest ball-strikers in the women’s game. With her looking like that again, how can you rule out another win on these courts?

Badosa had won two matches in a row in straight sets before facing Kasatkina, and the Spaniard looked about as good as possible in that close victory. There were undoubtedly some moments in which Badosa got a little tight late in sets, but that’s natural for a player that hasn’t been on this stage in a while. The important thing is that Badosa was able to get through all of that, and it should only make her stronger the rest of the way.

Vekic is an opponent that can be very tough to beat on grass, but I’m just not sure where she’ll have a clear advantage over Badosa. Both of these players are aggressive baseliners, but Badosa has the ability to go a bit bigger without having to sacrifice her accuracy. Badosa is also a little stronger as a returner, which should ultimately make a big difference considering these two are pretty similar when it comes to serving.

All in all, it just feels like Badosa is playing at close to peak level, and I trust her a little more than Vekic. So, I’m completely fine with dealing with the juice and backing her. Badosa should also have the crowd in her corner here, which is always a good thing.
