When Jodie Burrage’s first-round match at Wimbledon took a scary twist, she immediately sprang into action.
The 23-year-old was a few points into the second set against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko and looking to claw her way back into the contest, when she soon noticed that a ball boy on her side of the court was in distress.
“He just said he was feeling really faint,” Burrage said afterwards. “He couldn't actually really talk. It was quite distressing to see.”
Burrage rushed over to him right away, and tried to get the boy’s blood sugar levels up with a sports drink and a gel. But when the gel didn’t quite do the trick, she called out to the spectators on Court No. 18 for suggestions.
Her resourceful thinking worked, and gave us the first Quote of the Day of The Championships:
“I just tried to get him some sugar, gave him a Gatorade and a gel,” she told press afterward. “The gel is not the nicest thing, so they managed to find some Percy Pigs somewhere along the line in the crowd, which he got down and then started to feel better. Yeah, hopefully he's feeling better now.”
“I definitely love a Percy Pig, that's for sure,” she added. “I was just like, 'This kid needs sugar.' He wasn't liking the gel. I was like, 'Yeah, definitely need something else.'
“Someone just shouted on the side, 'Got some sweets here if you want.' They were Percy Pigs."
