Jessica Bouzas Maneiro has a special way of silencing her doubters and critics—before and after every tennis match.

The 21-year-old Spaniard showed off both on Tuesday at Wimbledon, where she won her first Grand Slam main draw match in unforgettable style with a 6-4, 6-2 stunner over defending champion Marketa Vondrousova. After the match, her beaming smile and earnest interviews won over the hearts of tennis fans, too.

“I feel so happy right now. I can't believe it yet, so I have to take my time,” Bouzas Maneiro grinned in a post-match press conference. “I want to celebrate with my team, just to rest, do some physio and that's it, (treat it) like a normal day…

“I think my performance was good. I played so free. I don't know, I played happy. That's (the) way I'm playing. I think when I'm playing like that, my (best) tennis (comes) out."

The Spaniard’s victory over last year’s winner grabbed all the headlines, but it was an eye-catching “SHH” tattoo on her left hand that really got fans talking:

Q: I believe you have a tattoo on your finger… Can you tell us about that?

JESSICA BOUZAS MANEIRO: It was one of my first tattoos. It's not about (telling) people to just shut up. Nothing like that.

When you're a tennis player or (maybe there’s) a person in your life… You have a lot of people who (are) saying that you cannot do it. You're so bad, you don't have tennis, you don't have these qualities, your effort is not so good, I don't know…

To these people it’s like, shut up to them. Of course, not for the good people…

It was funny for me also!

Her fearless tennis is also sending a message, and it’s being heard loud and clear amid a year marked by breakthrough after breakthrough. Having started the year ranked outside WTA Top 150, Bouzas Maneiro is now ranked No. 83 in the world—and set to keep climbing.

Even her long awaited Top 100 breakthrough was a fairytale moment, coming during the week of the Mutua Madrid Open on home soil. Bouzas Maneiro fought through qualifying, and earned her first WTA main draw win via an upset over countrywoman and former world No. 2 Paula Badosa in the first round.

She’ll aim to keep the momentum going at Wimbledon, where she will meet a fellow Spaniard in the second round in Cristina Busca.
