Ostapenko Lil Wayne Wim2024

Everyone stay calm, it’s happening: The most ambitious crossover event in sports and music history is officially underway.

After getting a shoutout from former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko during a Tennis Channel interview, rapper Lil Wayne has accepted her invitation to watch a tennis match from her player box this summer.

While this pairing might seem completely random, it’s actually been several months in the making. Let’s recap:

Back in March, Ostapenko took a break from tennis to check out the Miami stop of Drake’s “Big As the What” Tour, which featured Lil Wayne at the Amerant Bank Arena. When she reflected on the experience a few months later during a Tennis Channel interview at the Madrid Open, she revealed she was a bigger fan of Weezy than Drizzy on that night.

“Honestly the part of the concert where it was Lil Wayne, I liked way better,” she told Prakash Amritraj in May. “I don’t know, I felt his vibe and music was so nice.

“When there was Drake, I was just standing, I was not dancing much. When Lil Wayne came out, I was like dancing every single song even if I didn’t know them.

"After the concert, I started to listen to a lot of Lil Wayne’s songs."

Two whole months after that interview, the rapper himself eventually responded to Ostapenko’s shoutout. He sent her a “thanks for da luv” via his Instagram Story—rocking the 27-year-old’s world in the process:

Q: What was your reaction when you saw Lil Wayne put your shoutout on his Instagram Story?

JELENA OSTAPENKO: I mean, it was crazy! He has like 19 million followers on Instagram, and when I saw this for the first time I was like Wow, he saw it and he’s aware of it. It’s, like, unbelievable.

And he also sent me a message saying that he’s a big fan of me as well. So for me, that was like… I was staring at my phone. I stopped and I was staring at my phone for like five minutes. I couldn’t believe Lil Wayne texted me. I mean, it’s amazing…

I would love to see him in my box, maybe when I’m playing in the US Open or when I’m in the US. I would love to see him watching me play, of course!

The American rapper, whose legal name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, was quick to accept Ostapenko’s invitation. A longtime tennis fan, Lil Wayne has previously name dropped Andre Agassi, accurately predicted the 2010 US Open men’s and women’s champions (from his cell on Rikers Island, no less) and once sampled Elena Dementieva’s grunt in a song—so it’s safe to say he knows his stuff.

As for Ostapenko, she’s developed a bit of a cult following as of late—much to her delight and bemusement—with actor Steve Carell recently revealing that the “intense” Latvian was his favorite player too.

“I think a lot of people really like that I’m kind of emotional,” she said. “Of course, sometimes I can go too much, but that’s my personality. I’m working on using emotions in the right way, to also help me on the court.

“But I feel like… I’m kind of fun to watch for a lot of fans!”

Ostapenko, the No. 13 seed, will next face Daria Snigur in the second round on Court 16 on Thursday.
