NEW YORK—There have been no shortage of superstars in attendance for what will likely be Serena Williams’ final major tournament. Among them on Arthur Ashe Stadium Wednesday evening was golfing champion Tiger Woods.

In a “Legends recognizing legends” moment, Serena opened up about the help Woods provided in getting her back on court for what has been the start of her so-called “evolution” away from the sport:

Tiger was seated near big sister Venus in Serena's players box on Arthur Ashe Stadium as the 23-time Grand Slam champion took on world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit.

Q. In your Vogue article you wrote about going to Tiger Woods for advice. How important was the advice that he gave to you in getting you back on court? What did it mean to you to have him in your box today?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, he's one of the reasons I'm here, one of the main reasons I'm still playing. So, we talked a lot. He was really trying to get me motivated.

There's a few people, but we were like, ‘Okay, we can do this together,’ you know?

It was good, because I didn't know what I wanted to do. I was just lost, so many questions. When you can rely on someone like that, I mean, my goodness, he's Tiger Woods, it was really helpful to get clarity.

Williams was well above par in her second round-encounter with world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, playing much cleaner tennis in the match’s crucial moments to ease back into the third round of a major for the first time since 2021 Roland Garros.
