Ranking jumps: Serena returns to the Top 8

After Rogers Cup wrapped this weekend, five players made significant ranking moves on Monday.

+2 — Up to No. 8 from No. 10

The Rogers Cup final ended in disappointment for Serena, who had to retire at the start of the first set against Bianca Andreescu due to a back injury. Still, she defeated Naomi Osaka for the first time along the way and secured her place back inside the Top 8 for the first time since stepping away to have her daughter in 2017.

The biggest mover this week, Marie Bouzkova, jumped almost 40 places, putting her on the cusp of making it into the Top 50. Reaching the semifinals in Toronto was a stunning week for the 21-year-old Czech as she defeated Sloane Stephens, Jelena Ostapenko and Simona Halep along the way before losing to Serena.

Andreescu, the name that is the talk of the tennis town, won the Rogers Cup to become the first Canadian woman in 50 years to raise the trophy.  It was the 19-year-old's first Premier 5 title, pushing her into the Top 15 for the first time. Time will tell to see if she can keep up the momentum at the Grand Slam level—she withdrew from Roland Garros and skipped Wimbledon with an arm injury.

The 23-year-old reaches a career-high ranking of world No. 8 after making it his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Montreal, while also becoming Russia's newest No. 1. Despite getting pushed aside by Rafael Nadal in the final, Medvedev can take pride in defeating Dominic Thiem and Karen Khachanov on his way to his second runner-up finish in two weeks.

It had been three years since Gael Monfils has seen the semifinals of an ATP Masters 1000 (Toronto in 2016), but the Rogers Cup saw him perform at the highest level—until he withdrew from his showdown with Nadal. Still, the Frenchman has come a long way from being outside of the Top 40 just last year.
