Tennis champions come and go, but style icons are forever, and Roger Federer intends to remain on the fashion throne with the launch of a forthcoming RF sunglasses line in partnership with Oliver Peoples.

The recently-retired Federer, who formally hung up his racquets at the 2022 Laver Cup, revealed an action-packed inspiration behind the shades in an exclusive with GQ.com: Тom Cruise in Mission Impossible II.

“Iconic,” the Swiss star said of the scene in which Cruise’s character receives his mission vis-à-vis his sunglasses “That moment has stuck with me.”

The father of four also put an emphasis on function, given his on-the-go lifestyle.

“These frames have to be solid around the head, and not fall off with, you know, the first flick of the neck,” he said.

“Whether it’s the way he carries himself in all situations [or] his clear, distinct vision of what classic style can mean, Roger matches the ethos of Oliver Peoples perfectly,” said Oliver Peoples CEO Rocco Basilico.

Federer has retained endorsements with brands like Uniqlo and Rolex since concluding his quarter-century career, and reclaimed ownership of his eponymous RF logo in 2020 after cutting ties with Nike two years prior.

Might Federer don a prototype of the line at the 2023 Met Gala, where he is serving as co-chair alongside Michael Coel, Dua Lipa, and Penelope Cruz, next week?
