The precocious, wildly quotable Naomi Osaka upended the WTA field in Indian Wells this past week, and has already enjoyed the upset of a lifetime over Serena Williams in Miami. Despite her penchant for good-natured truth-telling, and for pausing with refreshing awkwardness at times as she talks, Osaka was hardly alone among the immediately memorable speakers so far this month.
Here's a rundown of some of the most winking and/or potent verbal shots delivered:
1
Osaka, after beating Maria Sharapova:
"I feel like everyone to a point should have respect for the other person because it's the best players in the world. I feel like no one wants to cheer for a person that's like slamming their racquet everywhere and stuff. A part of that is having respect for the person and also respect for the game. I've never seen someone get angry and do well except for McEnroe, but I'm not really trying to do that. No offense or anything. I'm just trying to keep it in."
2
Serena Williams, after winning her first match in 14 months:
"From 0 to Serena, I'm probably just with the S."
