She may or may not have bungled a release of the biggest news of her year, but there's no way around this: Serena Williams was the social media queen of tennis in 2017.

She is equal parts Snapchat savant, Instagram ingenue and ferocious Facebooker as she gets millions of audience members the world over all atwitter over her every move. She makes the rounds on Reddit, casually name-drops Wikipedia to the tune of 28,000 retweets and solicits baby-teething advice on social. (Read: You best believe she received some worthy advising, as well as many responses worth taking with a grain – or a boulder – of salt.)

Only SW23 would be able to command rapt attention when she ever-so-delicately opens some packages that have arrived at her home only to reveal that her 2015 and 2017 Australian Open champions' trophies have arrived.

Before that this year, she surprised a couple randos by awarding them with a quick game of pickup tennis.

Only Serena could turn these two episodes into Social Media Events. Toss into that mix the fact that she made an emerald appearance at the Met Ball, a showing that more or less sewed up this 2017 Baseline Award for her startlingly early in the year.

Surely, Serena reigned supreme in 2017 on social channels. But don't take our word for it solely. Indeed, everyone from us at TENNIS and Baseline to USA Today readily recognizes this feat. Fans and media members alike await her every post with bated breath, and those who say they don't are lying to you.

We should expect no less from the woman who, late last year, partnered on a Snapchat game and sat on the Tribeca Film Festival's Snapchat jury. I've taken far more than 280 characters here to tell you the obvious truth about her command of social messaging. It's only fitting that we should let Serena have the last words.
