The WTA Tour might be staging a fan-vote for Player of the Year among its ranks, but its greatest active icon has had her say. Serena Williams, ever the social-media maven, replied to the WTA's Instagram post on the subject with a succinct answer: "Kerber."

As to whether Serena's take stands to reason, let's consider the cases for these five finalists:

Simona Halep

  • Grabbed the second Premier Mandatory title of her career in Madrid.
  • Failed to take out an injured Serena in their US Open quarterfinals.
  • Delivered precious little else of consequence.

Garbine Muguruza

  • Roland-Garros champion.
  • A lot of lulls and flailing about otherwise.

Angelique Kerber

  • Last woman standing at majors in Melbourne and New York = what matters, basically.
  • Wimbledon finalist.

Serena Williams:

  • Wimbledon winner.
  • Runner-up at Australian and French Opens.
  • Barely played outside the Slams.

Karolina Pliskova

  • US Open final appearance, including a decisive victory over Serena.
  • Cincinnati titlist.
  • Aces galore.

Aye, definitely Kerber. So let's have it out at the WTA's season-ending event in Singapore and turn the page to 2017.
