Andy Murray fought off four break points serving at 4-all in the third set and eventually snuck past Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5, after two hours and 51 minutes in Dubai on Monday, and the victory puts him within striking distance of a big career milestone.

Murray’s win over O’Connell was the 699th tour-level win of his career.

The three-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1, who just a few weeks ago broke back into the Top 100 for the first time since coming back from hip surgery in 2018, is on the verge of becoming just the 18th man in the entire Open Era—and the fourth active male player—to reach 700.
