World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev was in top form in his first-round match at the US Open on Monday night, cruising to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 win over former No. 7 Richard Gasquet.

The win was Medvedev’s 200th career tour-level victory. And with 37 winners to just 15 unforced errors—which included 15 aces to just four double faults—it would have been tough for even the best of the best to stop him from that milestone.

The Russian is now 200-96 in his career, and broken down he’s even more impressive on hard courts, where he’s 160-61. Medvedev is 25-14 on grass and 15-21 on clay.

He’s now won 12 of his last 14 matches at the US Open, having reached his first major final there in 2019 (falling to Rafael Nadal) and the semis in 2020 (falling to Dominic Thiem).

So the two-time Grand Slam singles finalist and defending ATP Finals champion's love affair with Flushing Meadows continues for another day—or, another late night. Earlier this year, Medvedev became the first player outside of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray to be ranked No. 2 in the world since 2005. That was a big breakthough, but if the four-time ATP Masters 1000 winner can win his first major at the US Open, it might be seen as even more impressive, given who remains ranked above him.
