He had come close before, beating three Top 20 players—No. 18 Gael Monfils in Estoril in 2019, No. 19 Karen Khachanov in Paris last year and No. 13 Roberto Bautista Agut at Rotterdam last month—but in Monte Carlo on Tuesday, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina finally got his very first Top 10 win.

The 21-year-old Spaniard beat No. 10-ranked Italian Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Masters 1000 event, 7-5, 6-3, his first win in five career meetings against Top 10 players.

“I knew that Matteo was coming back from an injury and he wouldn’t have a lot of rhythm,” Davidovich Fokina said of the Italian, who had been sidelined since the Australian Open with an abdominal injury.

“I was able to take advantage of that today.”
