When the tour stopped due to COVID-19 last March, Gael Monfils was one of the hottest players on the tour, going on a 12-match winning streak to not only pick up ATP titles in back-to-back weeks in Montpellier and Rotterdam, but also to reach the semifinals of Dubai, where he fell to Novak Djokovic after holding three match points.

He was No. 9 when the ATP rankings were frozen for five months.

Between the restart last summer and this week, Monfils struggled—he won just three matches in 14 tournaments and dipped to No. 22 in the world.

But in Toronto, he's risen again. With wins over No. 43 John Millman and No. 52 Frances Tiafoe, he’s not only won back-to-back matches for the first time since the restart, but this is also his first ATP quarterfinal since the restart—at a Masters 1000, no less.

Awaiting Monfils in his 17th career Masters 1000 quarterfinal will be John Isner—the Frenchman is 7-5 against the American, winning four of their last five meetings.

Should Monfils reach the semifinals here, he’s also projected to return to the Top 20.
