Stat of the Day: Paula Badosa records 50th win since the start of 2021

Paula Badosa’s 6-0, 6-3 victory over Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan on Wednesday was a double milestone—not only did it put her into the third round of the Australian Open for the first time, but it was also her 50th tour-level win since the start of 2021.

Before 2021, Badosa was 18-22 in her career at tour-level...

... but since the start of 2021 she’s now 50-18, going 43-17 in 2021 (the fifth-most wins on the women’s tour for the year) and she’s 7-1 so far in 2022, losing her first match of the year against Victoria Azarenka in Adelaide but winning seven in a row since then to capture the title in Sydney and win her first two rounds in Melbourne.

“I think I’m growing as a person, as a tennis player, day by day. I’m working very hard. I’m believing in myself,” Badosa said after her victory over Trevisan.

“It’s much different. Last year I was 70 in the world. Now I’m 6. I’m improving a lot. I’m really happy and proud of how I am working. I’m really doing an amazing job with my team. So, yeah, everything, it’s rolling. I’m enjoying day by day.

“I know I’m going to have tough matches here. It’s never easy playing as a favorite as well, so it’s a new experience for me. I’m slowly getting into it, and I’m happy that I’m in the third round.”

Next up for Badosa will be Marta Kostyuk, who upset No. 32 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo in her second-round match, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
