Italian teenager Jannik Sinner got off to a winning start in Rome on Monday, beating Ugo Humbert in exactly an hour and a half, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round of the Masters 1000 event at the Foro Italico.

Sinner’s win over the Frenchman was a milestone in two ways. It wasn’t just his 20th win of the year (he’s now 20-8 in 2021), it was also his 50th career tour-level win (he’s now 50-29 in his career).

As a comparison, only four of the current Top 10 players on the ATP rankings got their 50th career tour-level wins when they were still teenagers: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev all hit that milestone when they were 19, like Sinner, and Rafael Nadal got there as an 18-year-old.

And speaking of Nadal, that’s who Sinner will face in the second round in Rome this week.

The two have played each other once before, with Nadal winning in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros last October, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-1. The Spaniard didn’t lose a set en route to his 20th Grand Slam title that fortnight, but the Sinner match was one of his toughest of the tournament—the Italian actually served for the first set at 6-5 and was also up an early break in the second set at 3-1.
