wawrinka-tsitsipas

Stan Wawrinka has receipts, and he's not afraid to show 'em. The three-time Grand Slam champion threw some major shade Stefanos Tsitsipas' way in response to the Greek's latest lengthy complaint regarding the ATP's schedule by unearthing a video of Tsitsipas singing a very different tune.

Five of the tour's most prestigious tournaments beneath the Grand Slams currently stretch over two weeks, which will increase to seven in 2025 under the tour's "OneVision" plan. The plan has attracted criticism from many corners of the sport, and Tsitsipas had been among the most vocal detractors this year, a group which has included fellow players Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev's coach Gilles Cervara. In a lengthy post to the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, the Greek one again raised voice in dissent.

Responding to former world No. 1 Andy Roddick's latest Serve podcast, where the 2003 US Open champion called the bloated events "stupid" and "the worst," the Greek piled on: He called these events "a drag" and that expanding them is "fixing what wasn’t broken."

"Players aren’t getting the recovery or training time they need, with constant matches and no space for the intense work off the court," Tsitsipas wrote. "It’s ironic that the [ATP tour] committed to this format without knowing if it could actually improve the schedule, but the quality likewise."

"If the goal was to ease the calendar, extending every 1000 to two weeks is a backwards move," the two-time major finalist added.

Earlier this year in Rome, which has been a 12-day event since last year, Tsitsipas commented that the two-week events have "a big toll on our bodies" and is playing a "massive role" in player injuries.

But it was his latest thoughts that provoked a fresh response from Wawrinka, who remembered when the Greek was saying the opposite.

Replying directly to Tsitsipas' post, the three-time Grand Slam champion pulled up a video released by the ATP two years ago, where Tsitsipas quizzed ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi about the OneVision plan, and enthusiastically voiced his support for it.

"I love that idea," Tsitsipas says in the video, adding that the changes would help the sport find "solutions for a better future."

Wawrinka's not-so-subtle dig was received enthusiasically by one-time world No. 10 Lucas Pouille and former player Tennys Sandgren, with coach and commentator Mark Petchey commenting "receipt logged." It also was the second time in recent weeks that the former world No. 3 used his X account to reply to comments from one of the game's current crop of top players, as also shared his unfiltered thoughts on Jannik Sinner saying he "doesn't play for money" after the Italian competed at the lucrative Six Kings Slam exhibition event in Saudi Arabia in October (though the post was later deleted).

It's safe to say that the rest of the tour should be on notice: Be careful with your words, because Wawrinka's watching.
