Teenage standout Daria Lopatetska was quickly making an impact in her second season as a professional, picking up three ITF W25 titles to reach No. 231 in the WTA Rankings. Then, her knee gave out last week in Rome.

Needing funding for an emergency operation on her meniscus, Lopatetska and her family turned everywhere they could for help, posting an open letter requesting donations. As it turns out, Ukraine’s most prolific player, Elina Svitolina, stepped in to cover the cost of the €12.000 surgery.

In a rough translation with Ukrainian tennis news site BTU, Lopatetska’s sister Maria revealed Svitolina’s act of kindness and confirmed the operation went well. She added that Daria would stay put in Italy for the time being as she begins the rehabilitation process.

Svitolina’s gesture to support Lopatetska in a time of need–and buy into her future prospects–is sure to be applauded by tennis insiders and fans alike.
