The WTA Finals in Singapore is played in a very unique format, and that was on display on Thursday with some White Group drama. When Karolina Pliskova won her match over Petra Kvitova in straight sets, she secured her spot in the semifinals.

Then Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki took the court. Wozniacki, the defending champion, needed to win in straight sets to advance, while Svitolina only had to win one set. Wozniacki won the first set, 7-5, meaning the winner of the second set qualified for the semifinals.

In a clutch performance, Svitolina grabbed it 7-5. Had she lost it, her season would have ended in disappointment, and some awkwardness.

Svitolina had entered the match with Wozniacki a perfect 2-0 behind wins over Kvitova and Pliskova, while Wozniacki was 1-1.

It's Svitolina's second time playing the WTA Finals and first time making it out of the round robin, so it was no ordinary set-point celebration.

The Ukrainian would wrap up the match, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, clinching her status as the winner of the White Group ahead of Pliskova. The Red Group plays on Friday to decide the final two spots.
