The clay-court season is missing Venus Williams, and Williams hinted that the feeling is mutual on Twitter when she retweeted highlights from one of her most epic victories over Martina Hingis in 2006.

“I had full lower body cramps in this match!” Williams admitted last week of the 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 Warsaw win. “It was dramatic. We always had the craziest battles!”

Hingis had only recently returned to action after a three-season hiatus, but was quick to renew her rivalry with her fellow former world No. 1, whom she only narrowly edged 10-9 in their 1997-2002 head-to-head.

Meeting again on clay in Poland, Hingis held a set and a break advantage before Williams roared back to reach the quarterfinals of a stacked event that featured stars like Kim Clijsters, Elena Dementieva, and a young Polish wild card named Agnieszka Radwanska.

Hingis avenged the defeat two weeks later at the Foro italico in Rome to flip their head-to-head back in her favor, 11-10, but while the Swiss Miss hung up her racquets for good in 2017, Williams is still measuring a return to action despite having not played since January.

In her most recent appearance on court, she defeated Katie Volynets to reach the round of 16 in Auckland.

This time has been tough as I've been out a long time now. But all I can do is do the work and have a little fun too," she said in a March Instagram Q&A.

Williams posted video of herself training earlier this month, and even teased a foray into padel, promising to try it again.

Might Venus rise again to kick off another clay-court rivalry?
