  • 6/28/2024

What she’s done since last summer

  • Reached the semifinals at tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Istanbul
  • Made a Grand Slam doubles quarterfinal at Roland Garros (2020)
  • Reached the fourth round of Roland Garros (2021)

Key Stat

  • Kostyuk won her first junior Grand Slam title at 14 years old

Kostyuk was the first from her generation to strike it big on the WTA circuit, making it just shy of the second week at the 2018 Australian Open as a 15-year-old. A combination of injuries and expectations stalled the Ukrainian teenager for over two years before she turned heads once more at last year’s US Open, where she took eventual champion Naomi Osaka to three sets.

"The moment I turned 18, I kind of let all the things go,” she explained. “Right now, I don't have that pressure at all because I enjoy the journey, I enjoy the process, I enjoy being out here playing even though we have tough times because of COVID.”

After cracking the Top 100 at the end of the season, Kostyuk kickstarted her 2021 season with a semifinal finish in Abu Dhabi, and recovered from a bout with COVID-19 to enjoy her best run yet at a major.

Shocking former champion Garbiñe Muguruza in the first round, the youngster made it all the way into the second week, where she challenged defending champion Iga Swiatek for two entertaining sets.

Comfortable on all surfaces, how might Kostyuk translate this new surge of success?
