Fifteen years ago on September 8, 2001, Venus and Serena Williams faced off in the first-ever all-sister US Open final. The older Williams would win 6-2, 6-4. Venus, the defending champion, was 21 years old and Serena was just 19.
It was the sisters first time playing each other in a Grand Slam final, but far from their last. The phenomenon has since happened seven more times (with Serena prevailing in six of those matches).
All these years later, Serena and Venus are still at the top of the game (ranked No. 1 and No. 6, respectively).
"It's really wonderful to have a sibling on tour. I know that Serena and I's experience is extraordinary, but for us it feels normal," Venus said this week. "Then we always have our whole family here with us, and that feels normal."
At the US Open this year, 36-year-old Venus was ousted in the fourth round by Karolina Pliskova, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Serena will have a chance to avenge her older sibling when she takes on the Czech on Thursday night in the semifinals.
