It was September 27, 2009 and Frenchman Gael Monfils won his home title in Metz. He went to lift the trophy, and his hair style seemed to imitate the unusual hardware almost perfectly.

Monfils was just 23 and beat Philip Kohlschreiber in the final for his second career ATP title (he's added four titles since then).

That year also marked the first time the talented entertainer cracked the Top 10. Now at the age of 30, he's back in the thick of it again, rising up to No. 8 after reaching the semifinals in New York.

Monfils is absent from the Metz draw this year where world No. 10 Dominic Thiem is the top seed.
