It was their first meeting and many thought the match would be a quick win for the Frenchman, who's athleticism and shot-hitting abilities can baffle even the world's best players. Fokina narrowly lost the first set, and somehow his inexperience on the bigger stages had little effect, as he won, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-4. The Spaniard would end the year ranked No. 87.
