Fans would be forgiven for hearing Fokina's name and going, "who?"

The 20-year-old would appear at the Next Gen ATP Finals, but for the majority of the season he was playing in ATP Challengers. That's why his semifinal run through the Estoril Open made heads turn, especially his quarterfinal match against Gael Monfils.

It was their first meeting and many thought the match would be a quick win for the Frenchman, who's athleticism and shot-hitting abilities can baffle even the world's best players. Fokina narrowly lost the first set, and somehow his inexperience on the bigger stages had little effect, as he won, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-4. The Spaniard would end the year ranked No. 87.
