The 19-year-old Italian ousted Ugo Humbert, 6-2, 6-4, to set up a blockbuster second round with nine-time event champion Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard leads their head-to-head series, 1-0.

Jennifer Brady

The American rolled into the second round after a 6-1, 6-4 win over Zhang Shuai. Brady will play Ekaterina Alexandrova next.

Petra Kvitova

The No. 11 seed served her way out of trouble, rallying past Magda Linette, 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. Next up for Kvitova is fellow veteran Vera Zvonareva, who defeated Christina McHale, 6-3, 6-0.
