The year 2017 in on-court tennis style may not have been one for the history books, per se, but it harbored more than a few times when brand plus player got it right, so right.

Maria Sharapova, (Nike), US Open

It was the all-black, faux-leather–and-lace look that adorned Maria Sharapova's return to major tennis after more than a year and a half away, and it did not disappoint.

This collaboration with ex-Givenchy design chief Riccardo Tisci nodded to Sharapova's US Open–winning past with Swarovski crystals dotting that Hepburn-esque LBD. It was just the kind of grand re-entrance required of one with such star wattage.
