Two big reasons why Federer and Nadal haven't played in NY

NEW YORK — With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal combining to win all of the majors so far this season, it seemed like it was finally going to happen: a US Open showdown. The fans wanted it, the medida wanted it and even the players themselves wanted it.

"If it's Roger Federer, of course I am excited to play that match, and of course is special to play against him here in New York for the first time in our career," Nadal said. "That's something that didn't happen before and is something strange, because we played couple of times in all the important events of the world. I will be very excited to play that match, of course."

In 37 meetings spanning 13 years, Federer and Nadal have yet to meet in front of a New York City crowd.

It seems impossible, and yet there are two big reasons, or two big players, for why it's never happened.

Djokovic upset Federer in the US Open semifinals twice (2010 and 2011) before taking on Nadal in the finals.

In 2009, on his way to the US Open crown, Del Potro stunned Nadal in the semifinals before beating Federer in the final.

The Argentinian's 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 win over Federer on Wednesday night was more great news for him, but shattering news for the fans praying for the highly anticipated Friday night Federer vs. Nadal showdown in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"Of course it is a pity, but, you know, Juan Martin deserves it more," Federer said. "I feel I have no place in the semis and he will have a better chance to beat Rafa, to be honest. The way I played or playing right now, it's not good enough in my opinion to win this tournament."
