US Open bids Louis Armstrong Stadium farewell

The last match at the 39-year-old stadium was played Tuesday.

On Tuesday, one year after bidding adieu to the Grandstand, Louis Armstrong took its final bow after 39 years of great service. As part of the US Open’s huge makeover, a new Louis Amstrong stadium will be constructed with a roof for 2018.

The "old" Louis Armstrong Stadium has been the site of more than 2,000 matches over the years. Marc and Feliciano Lopez (no relation) won the last match ever on the second-largest US Open stadium, beating Bob and Mike Bryan, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3.

The final march out of the stadium was accompanied by a very fitting song.

Players past and present paid tribute to a court that’s given them plenty of fond memories over the years.

Kai Nishikori got to play the last singles match on the "old," beating Ivo Karlovic in straight sets in the fourth round.
