NEW YORK—The match was over but the library was open.

Daniil Medvedev proved once again that reading is (what?) fundamental after his late surge to defeat Sebastian Baez, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (6), shouting out one fan in particular during a deliciously shady on-court interview.

“I think there is one guy,” he says to Pam Shriver on Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I don’t know if he has a girlfriend or wife, but I don’t know how the girlfriend or wife is going to sleep because I think he’s so pumped up that he’s going to tonight say, ‘VAMO! VAMO! VAMO! VAMO! Like non-stop. I feel sorry for him.”

Medvedev had been engaging with the New York crowd—with whom he has long shared a complicated relationship, dating back to his 2019 run to the final—throughout a contentious third set as the 2021 champion fell behind a break to the inspired Argentine, who was enjoying a career-best result at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

After requesting umpire Aurélie Tourte remind the crowd to stay silent between first and second serves, the avid gamer repeatedly gestured to be silent and engendering a wave of boos in the process.

But those ghostly cheers vanished as Medvedev reeled off five of the final six games, saving set point to silence the Baez fans and put himself into the second week, where a National Bank Open rematch with No. 13 seed Alex de Minaur awaits.

Though the late finish will likely preclude Medvedev—called “a piece of work” by Pam Shriver—from conducting a formal press conference, one can only imagine the reads he’s saving for the next time he’s in front of a microphone.
