Vandeweghe jumps into the Top 10 for first time in career

The 2017 season has been a breakout year for CoCo Vandeweghe, who, at 25, is making her Top 10 debut for the first time.

After ending the 2016 season at No. 37, the American made big runs in big tournaments throughout the year to steadily climb the ranks. She's joined in her Top 10 debut by fellow 25-year-old (and her Hopman Cup partner) Jack Sock.

For Vandeweghe, her rise started with the Australian Open, in which she knocked out defending champion Angelique Kerber in straight sets, and went on to stun Garbine Muguruza to make the semifinals.

After suffering a first-round loss in the French Open and switching coaches from Craig Kardon to Pat Cash, she bounced back at Wimbledon to get to the quarterfinals.

In front of a home crowd at Stanford, Vandeweghe flew past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Newcomer of the Year CiCi Bellis before losing the final to Madison Keys in two tight sets.

Then the American made her second career Grand Slam semifinal in Flushing Meadows. With wins over Agnieszka Radwanska and then-No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, she got herself one match from the final before falling to Keys for the third time this year.

Last week, Vandeweghe recorded a 6-3, 6-3 semifinal win over Ashleigh Barty, making the final of the WTA Elite Trophy, the tour's second-tier final championship. She would fall to an in-form Julia Goerges in straight sets on Sunday.

Her performance at the tournament helped her leapfrog Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kristina Mladenovic to clinch a Top 10 year-end spot. The year is not over for Vandeweghe, as she heads to Minsk next to lead Team USA against Belarus in the Fed Cup final starting on Saturday.
