It was only fitting that Madrid native Fernando Verdasco joined the 500 career match wins club at the Caja Magica this week.

The world No. 37, one of many great Spanish players of the last decade, got his Mutua Madrid Open campaign off to a winning start against Italian Paolo Lorenzi.

The 34 year-old veteran became the sixth Spanish player to win 500 matches and just the ninth active ATP player.

Unfortunately for the home fans, Verdasco couldn't get to 501 as he fell to Leonardo Mayer in straight sets on Wednesday.
