Virtual reality comes to the Madrid Open

Get your headsets ready: The Mutua Madrid Open is taking the plungeinto virtual reality.

The tournament has announced it will broadcast matches on center court in stunning 360-degree, 8K resolution for the most life-like tennis experience yet. It will be the first ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier Mandatory event to broadcast in VR.

Special 360 and 180-degree cameras will be placed on center court to help fans see the action from any angle on a phone or computer—you don’t even need a VR headset (though VR stands will be onsite at the stadium for fans to use as well). Starting on Wednesday, fans can watch the 360-degree matches on Spanish TVE’S YouTube channel, similar to their Davis Cup broadcasts.

In working with Yerba Buena VR, a Spanish-American startup specializing in VR livestreaming for sports, the Mutua Madrid Open is doing its part to innovate on the tennis viewing experience and elevate its status on the ATP tour.

Feliciano Lopez, who is set to take over as tournament director next year, recently unveiled grand plans for the event, stating that he hoped it would become “the fifth Grand Slam” someday.

The Madrid Open is set to begin on Monday with world No. 1 Rafael Nadal looking to extend his clay-court winning streak and defend his title.
