Imagine a time before the COVID-19 pandemic. You’ve boarded a plane headed to New York City. The seat next to you continues to remain open as passengers fill the plane. Dreams of extra personal space are a real possibility.

Then, it all comes to a halt. But as a stranger sits down next to you, what you don’t know, is a much bigger dream has just been unearthed.

On Wednesday, Galina Voskoboeva shared a touching Instagram post illustrating that love can be served up just about anywhere. A former world No. 42 in singles, who has transitioned to a career in doubles in recent years, tied the knot with husband Jonathan after meeting on a flight two years earlier no less.

The chance encounter came after a disappointing first-round exit at the Western & Southern Open.

“Flying from Cincinnati to New York in a super small plane, I was hoping that nobody would sit in the last empty seat next to me. But a man did sit down and it was Jonathan,” Voskoboeva recalled. “We spoke non-stop the entire flight, but on arrival separated without taking each other’s numbers.”

The Kazakh disclosed that Jonathan reached out over Facebook in 2020. The two connected over FaceTime, putting their sizable time zone differences aside. While the coronavirus added another hurdle, it didn't stop this romance from rising to the top.

“After three weeks, the pandemic started and they closed the borders. During the lockdown we were counting the days when any border would open,” she continued. “After five months, we started to see each other in Turkey. And then in February, I finally came to Cincinnati.”

What’s next? Voskoboeva last appeared at the 2019 US Open. Tying her sentiment together, the 36-year-old wrote, “Cincinnati may be a good tournament for another comeback!”

We’d love to see it.
