Washington Wizards to celebrate Frances Tiafoe with bobblehead giveaway

This one's worth a head nod: Frances Tiafoe's favorite basketball team is giving away a special collectable depicting the 2022 US Open semifinalist at a game this week.

The first 10,000 fans through the gates at Capital One Arena when Tiafoe's hometown Washington Wizards play the Philadelphia 76ers on Feb. 10 will snag themselves a special-edition bobblehead, which features him wearing a Wizards uniform and holding a tennis racquet stenciled in the team's colors. At the base is a “Welcome to Maryland” highway sign, a reference to Tiafoe's Hyattsville, Md. roots, in addition to his name.

The collectable is one of three that Wizards fans can snag at games as a part of the team's “For The District” series. Virginia Ali, civil rights icon and the co-founder of D.C.'s famous Ben's Chili Bowl restaurant, was honored on Jan. 15, and rapper Pusha T's likeness will be distributed on March 17.

The campaign "recognizes and honors those who have made an impact and bring pride" to the D.C. area, per a media release from the team.

The celebrations come with a charitable donation from the Wizards to an organization of the subject's choice. The team will donate $10,000 to Tiafoe's eponymous charitable fund, launched in conjunction with the USTA Foundation last year.

But Tiafoe likely won't be in the house to snag his mini-me, or at least hopes not to be. The American is the top seed at this week's Dallas Open, and the semifinals are scheduled for Saturday on the campus of Southern Methodist University. Tiafoe is hoping for a deep run at the ATP 250 event after a 2-2 start to his season, including a second-round exit at the Australian Open.

Tiafoe did change his schedule, though, for a once-in-a-lifetime moment featuring another one of his favorite teams, the Marlyand Terrapins, over the weekend. Tiafoe was spotted courtside as the Maryland women faced Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes, and he even mingled with Iowa's superstar guard before the game.

Lauding the generational hooper as "box office" to reporters at the game, Tiafoe watched the senior score 38 points at Marlyand's expense in Iowa's 93-85 win.
