Sometimes winning championship point is the second most difficult thing to do on Finals Day.

Such was the case for Generali Open champion Sebastian Baez who, along with runner-up and hometown favorite Dominic Thiem, struggled to pop their corks of champagne—and this isn’t a euphemism!—for an interminable 38 seconds following Baez’s 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The 22-year-old was otherwise in superb form in Kitzbuhel, dropping just one set en route to his third ATP title—and second of 2023—but the trophy ceremony held its own set of challenges as the pair looked to kick off the ceremony with bottles of bubbly.

Perhaps stealing the show was one of the youngsters in ceremonial dress on the podium, watching with an instantly iconic expression that conveyed the crowd's collective bemusement.

As in the match, Baez proved more persistent and elicted cheers from the Austrian crowd as he secured this overdue off-court victory and took a celebratory swig.

Despite a revelatory week at home, Thiem fell at the last hurdle but leaves Kitzbuhel with plenty of positives after reaching his first ATP final in over two years. Letting the 2020 US Open champion in on the fun, Baez gamely doused Thiem with champagne after the 80-minute contest.

With the title bringing Baez back towards the Top 40, the Argentine may need to get used to popping champagne bottles as he appears back on course to bettering the career-high ranking of No. 30 he earned back in April.
